Apple's high-efficiency format
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's chosen photo format for iPhones since iOS 11. It offers roughly 2× the compression efficiency of JPG for equivalent quality, which means more photos in the same storage. The tradeoff is compatibility — outside Apple's ecosystem, support is patchy. Many web tools, image editors, document tools and even some browsers don't accept HEIC.
Converting HEIC to JPG is the pragmatic choice when you need to share iPhone photos with anyone outside the Apple world. The conversion introduces a small quality loss (HEIC is more efficient than JPG), but at quality 90+, the loss is invisible to the eye. The result is a JPG that opens everywhere.
To prevent HEIC creation in the first place, iPhone users can change Settings → Camera → Formats to 'Most Compatible', which produces JPGs instead of HEICs. But for users with years of HEIC photos already in their library, a batch conversion tool is the right path to universal compatibility.
