When to switch formats

Converting JPG to PNG is rarely about quality — JPG's losses are baked in the moment the JPG was created, and converting to PNG can't undo them. The real reason to convert is to unlock PNG features: transparency, lossless editing, or compatibility with tools that require PNG. A photo you need to make transparent (e.g. for a product photo overlay) needs to be PNG. A photo you'll edit repeatedly in Photoshop benefits from PNG to avoid generation loss.

The tradeoff is file size. PNG's lossless compression is dramatically larger than JPG's lossy compression for photographic content — typically 5-10× larger. A 2 MB JPG becomes a 15 MB PNG. For web use, that's a serious cost. Use PNG when you need its features; use JPG when you just need to share a photo.

A practical workflow: edit in PNG (lossless, so you can save repeatedly without quality loss), then export to JPG for delivery. That gives you the best of both worlds — a high-quality master and a small, shareable derivative. Converting JPG → PNG → JPG doesn't help; it just adds an extra lossy step.
