Lossless iPhone photo archival
For long-term archival of iPhone photos, PNG is the choice when every detail matters. HEIC is a lossy format — when you take a photo, the camera's HEIC encoder discards some data to shrink the file. Converting HEIC to JPG adds another lossy step, compounding the loss. Converting HEIC to PNG preserves exactly what's in the HEIC file, with no further loss.
The tradeoff is file size. PNG's lossless compression is dramatically larger than HEIC for photo content — typically 5-10× larger. A 3 MB HEIC photo becomes a 15-30 MB PNG. That's fine for archival (storage is cheap) but unacceptable for sharing (email size limits, slow uploads, slow page loads).
For most users, HEIC to JPG is the right conversion — small quality loss (invisible at quality 90+), much smaller files, universal compatibility. HEIC to PNG is the right conversion only when you need a lossless master, when every pixel matters (photo editing source, scientific imagery, evidence preservation).
