The metadata PDFs carry

Every PDF carries a small block of metadata — title, author, subject, keywords, creation date, modification date, the software that produced it. This metadata shows up in file browsers, search indexes, and PDF readers. It's how a well-organized document library tells 'Quarterly Report Q3 2024' from 'Untitled-final-v3-final.pdf'.

Two practical tasks come up. The first is fixing bad metadata: documents exported from the wrong template, files that picked up the creator's username as the author, PDFs that lost their title during conversion. The second is privacy: PDF metadata can leak the author's name, the original file path on the author's computer, and the editing software used. Stripping metadata before sharing sensitive documents is a small but real privacy improvement.

Note that PDF metadata is separate from image metadata (EXIF data in embedded photos) and from the document's content stream. Editing PDF metadata doesn't affect the visible content of the document at all — only the descriptive information about it.
