Quality cliffs and sweet spots
Every image has a 'quality cliff' — a setting below which visual quality drops sharply for very small additional savings. For most photos stored as JPG, that cliff sits around 60-70 quality. Above it, quality improves gradually with rising file size; below it, artifacts appear (blocking, banding, halos around edges) for almost no size benefit. The right quality for any image is just above the cliff.
Different images have different cliffs. A photo with smooth gradients (skies, skin tones) shows artifacts at higher quality settings — maybe 75 is the cliff. A flat-color graphic with sharp edges (a logo, a chart) can tolerate much lower quality — maybe 40 is fine. Photo content is more sensitive than graphic content, and your quality setting should reflect that.
Generating five variants and comparing them side-by-side takes the guesswork out. You can see exactly where the cliff is for your specific image, and pick the variant just above it. For an image-heavy site, this kind of per-image optimization can cut total image weight by 30-50% compared to a single 'quality 85 for everything' policy.
