GIFs and static frames

Animated GIFs are sequences of frames stored in a single file. Each frame is a complete image; the animation comes from displaying them in sequence. Extracting a single frame as a JPG gives you a static preview — useful for thumbnails of animations, documentation that needs to show a representative frame, or scenarios where the animation isn't relevant.

Most workflows that need a GIF frame want the first frame — it's the frame that displays before the animation starts in contexts that don't auto-play (some email clients, some social media preview thumbnails). A few workflows want a specific later frame — the punchline of a reaction GIF, the key frame of a tutorial animation. This tool will support both.

For workflows that need every frame as a separate image (to convert a GIF to a video, to edit individual frames, to build a stop-motion project), we'll add a 'split GIF into frames' option that outputs a ZIP of numbered frames. That's on the roadmap after the single-frame extraction tool ships.
