Modernizing PNGs for the web
PNG is a great format — lossless, transparent, universally supported. But it's also large, often unnecessarily so. WebP's lossless mode offers PNG's strengths (transparency, lossless quality) at a fraction of the file size — typically 25-35% smaller for the same content. For an image-heavy site, that's a substantial bandwidth and storage saving.
Two distinct use cases favor different settings. For graphics, logos, icons and screenshots with text, lossless WebP is the right choice — it preserves every pixel exactly, with no artifacts, while shrinking the file. For photo-like content that happens to be in PNG (a photo exported from Photoshop as PNG, for instance), lossy WebP at quality 80-90 produces a much smaller file with no visible quality loss.
Transparency is preserved through both modes — WebP supports full 8-bit alpha, just like PNG. The transparent regions of the source stay transparent in the output, with no flattening to a background color needed. This makes PNG to WebP a near-strict improvement for web delivery of any PNG content.
